In Liptov, one of the favourite cycle routes lead around the Liptovska Mara reservoir, a popular recreation centre. Best start is in Liptovsky Mikulas, but since this is a closed circuit, it is possible to connect to it at any point.
Surface: asphalt
Level of difficulty: easy to moderate
Distance: cca 50 km
Ascent: mild, on good surface
Drawback: some road traffic
Highlights: lake + mountains scenery, organic brewery, celtic archeological site, all-wooden articular church, great places to stop and eat
Liptovsky Mikulas → Aquapark Tatralandia → Liptovsky Trnovec → Liptovska Sielnica
Possibility: Under the hill at the Y-shaped crossroad turn right (original way leads left) and head to Kvacany (4 km). There is an organic brewery there with excellent beer. Drinking beer on bike is of course not advised (or legal), but you can buy supplies for after the trip.
Back on the crossroad there is a great place for lunch with an outside playground. Stop here if you’re hungry or have kids in carriage.
Continue down the road along the shore: Liptovska Sielnica → Hlinik (turn left on the crossroad to Bobrovnik) → Bobrovnik → Havranok
Havranok is an outdoor celtic archeological site, too interesting to be missed! On the shore, there is the most distinctive landmark of the dam – bright white church tower over the flooded village. It’s a good place for a photograph or refreshment. The view features Western Tatras on the left, Low Tatras on the right and Liptovsky Mikulas in between. Continue on the right side of the dam wall to the village Vlasky.
Vlasky → Vlachy → Krmes → route N°18 → Sv. Kriz
If you still have energy, stop in Svaty Kriz to look at the unique all-wooden Evanjelic church, one of the largest wooden constructions in Central Europe.
Go back to the road which will lead you back to Liptovsky Mikulas. Have a refreshment in the lovely town square. You’ve earned it!
